There are many manufacturers offering many smartphones for different kinds of users. Often such strategy succeeds, but when words come to Nokia it seems everything will be very difficult as every device the company launched meets a harsh criticism. But surprisingly the Nokia E7 didn’t have such problems and was welcomed with a great enthusiasm. Probably its special design makes people forget all the antipathy they have got to Symbian^3 platform. Anyway, this business smartphone has won its worthy place among other high-end smartphones.
First the Nokia E7 was announced in September, 2010 and in February we saw its arrival in many European countries, especially the UK was the first ones that offered this handset to its consumers. As the phone was released via the main carriers there were different kinds of data plans making it more comfortable to choose this handset. Three UK offers it for free with £35 (about $58) and £40 ($66) contracts. Almost the same conditions were offered via Vodafone, Orange, or T-Mobile for £469 (US$768), of course this is the SIM-free version. And before launching in the US the phone became available in other counties such as New Zealand, Canada, etc. Finally the E7 reached to US shores at the beginning of April and was offered for $649. As you see the price talks about the phone’s advantages and class itself.
The phone looks quite attractive and it is impossible not to agree with this argument. The form-factor it comes in is quite different from other sliding handsets, because screen is tint in such way that is the most comfortable for working. There is very little amount of smartphones with such display, but no one of them has so well designed keyboard.
Generally, the Nokia E7 has very compact design, and it comes in dimensions of 123.7×62.4×13.6mm and weighs 176g. So we can state it is one of the slimmest smartphones with sliding QWERTY keyboard. That means holding it in hands we have got a feel of an ordinary phone, but deepening in its feature the vision is changed immediately.
Its metal body gives an unusual solid view to the phone and other plastic phones looks like a cheap child’s toy compared with the E7. The breakout shell of the device is developed very well and when you open the keyboard there is not any inconvenience. This technology was got from an earlier smartphone and in this aspect the Finnish manufacturer has once again demonstrated the highest class. Plus, you don’t have to pull the display wholly, you just have to push it in 5mm and the all other “job” the phone will do itself. After opening the display stands at 30-degree angle making it very comfortable for watching videos, viewing pictures or capturing photos.
On the top of the smartphone we can find an on/off button which is also used to unlock the handset. There are also located a standard 3.5-millimeter audio jack for headphones, mini-HDMI under the flap, the charging indicator, and USB-connector.
On front of the device we can see a speaker and a secondary camera for video calling. The front panel is also equipped with a light sensor and at the bottom of the Nokia E7 the developers located the only physical button which is responsible for the menu and switching between applications. Standard elements are placed on the back: it is the lens and an 8MPcamera, speakerphone and microphone.
On the right side of the body are located the volume keys and the zoom and dedicated camera key. At the top of the right end we can find a slot for a SIM card, which is completely removed from the housing device. Well, the bottom face is located the microphone.
The Nokia E7 sports the biggest display among all other Nokia handsets. So we can assume there is not any other Nokia handset with a 4-inch touchscreen. But do not think this phone boasts only by the sizes of its display as the screen comes with the best quality and it is a very hard deal to injure it.
The Nokia E7 is equipped with an innovative capacitive touch screen made with the help of ClearBlack technology, which has high contrast and color reproduction, and also lets you save battery power. Improved reflectivity of the screen makes users to look the pictures more clearly in direct sunlight, and the black color is displayed in natural ways. The screen has a resolution of 640x360pixels (16:9) and can display 16 million colors. The display supports multitouch technology to scale images, web-pages, maps Ovi Maps, etc.
The smartphone is equipped with a full QWERTY keyboard that is located under the display. So taking the device with both hands and turning it horizontally users can easier tap. When you open the keyboard display automatically switches from portrait mode to landscape.
The keys are located at some distance from each other, allowing them touching adjacent characters. The backlighting is white and uniform, so taping in the dark is not difficult.
The keys have also got special symbols on them and if we want to switch to them there is a special key located in the lower left corner of the keyboard.
The Nokia E7 is equipped with an 8MP camera with a dual-LED flash. The images are saved in JPEG or EXIF formats. It has got several shooting modes:
automatic – all parameters are set automatically, ideal for everyday shooting
user – you can manually set the necessary parameters (flash settings, white balance, color effects, sharpness, contrast, etc.)
portrait
landscape – is used for shooting on the street
night – is used for shooting in low light conditions without flash
night portrait – is used to create a portrait photos in low light with flash.
Unfortunately the camera doesn’t have got an autofocus which means you can’t get macro shots.
And finally the handset sports a secondary VGA camera on front that is used for video calling.

The phone is packed with a standard 1200mAh battery. At first sight the battery of the Nokia E7 is weak but developers have optimized power consumption of this smartphone. So users can watch videos up to 6 hours, listen to music up to 45 hours or play games up to 4 hours. It was officially announced the battery provides up to 540 minutes in GSM and 300 minutes in net WCDMA of talk time and 430 hours in GSM and 470 hours on WCDM in stand-by mode.
A USB-connector on the Nokia E7 is designed for both the charger and data transfer. It’s a standard USB 2.0 device allowing users to transfer files up to 4 Mbps. One of the advantages of this USB port is the On-The-Go (OTG) functionality. That means we can connect a simple USB flash or an external hard disk and view its content. But the Nokia E7 recognizes only those devices that are in FAT32 system.
Built-in Wi-Fi module supports standard 802.11 b/g/n. WLAN Wizard can scan for available networks and create a connection. Switching between WiFi and WLAN connections is done automatically. And users of the Nokia E7 have no need to do it manually.
Bluetooth wireless technology can establish a wireless connection to other compatible devices, such as other phones, computers, headsets and car kits. The phone is equipped with a Bluetooth v3.0 + EDR that can be found in a little number of devices currently (Nokia N8, C7, C6-01, Samsung Wave ? Wave II). So users can transfer files only between such devices that are compatible with the Nokia E7. But if you find such devices the transfer speed will be at 3Mbps.
With the help of an HDMI port the content of the phone can be viewed TV. For this deal you’ll need a HDMI cable that comes in the box and no additional configuration is needed.
This is a Symbian^3-powered device but the new version of the platform brings more improvements in graphics multi-tasking and much more. It is also provides a “single click” functionality allowing users to work with other devices via HDMI port.
By default, the smartphone offers three desktops with different widgets and icons. On the desktop we can see the main indicators showing battery level, the level of the network operator reception, the time and date, and elected a sound profile. But this doesn’t mean we can’t display call, messaging, network indicators and Internet connections.
Totally we can accommodate up to 6 different widgets that can be installed with shortcuts and quick access so we’ll have 24 widgets in the desktop.
Of course, the Nokia E7 provides built-in themes. They are simple, without frills, the changes affect mostly only the color palette. On each desktop can be set your own theme, and any picture. Additional themes for Nokia can be downloaded from Ovi Store.
The only physical button of the calls the main menu which represents the 12 icons displayed as icons or list. Each icon can be moved to another folder and renamed. Pressing on the button for a long time we can open an application manager. The view of app list is different in portrait and landscape modes.
The virtual keyboard can be called from each application that allows users to enter characters. For this deal we have to turn it into a horizontal position. On the bottom row of the keyboard are the Close key, the Shift key (double clicking on it we turn it on Caps Lock), etc.
Contacts app allows users to save and arrange unlimited amount of numbers, addresses and other information about contacts. The contact list can display entries from the SIM, phone and simultaneously from these two sources. For each subscriber can be assigned multiple phone numbers or an email address, fax number, personal data (birth date, name of spouse and children), the organization name, title, and even the name of the Secretary.

The Nokia E7 comes with pre-installed Office programs. It can be called from Office menu providing following apps:

The File Manager lets you access to the phone’s memory. From here you can manage your files: view them, copy from device to device, delete, create new folders. It’s very easy to work with files as once you select them the pop-up menu will offer all actions that are available at the moment. This app also lets to format the storage.
You can get quick translations from a built-in dictionary, it supports three languages: English comes pres-installed, while other two ones can be downloaded from the internet. Selecting Download Languages in menu the app will go on the appropriate page of Nokia for downloading the necessary languages.
There is also QuickOffice app that allows users to easily create, edit and share office documents of various types: text files, spreadsheets and presentations. Almost all the functions we have seen in PCs could be used in documents created with the Nokia E7: change the font, size, and spelling of words, format and color of cells and text in a spreadsheet, copy, paste and cut parts of the text. Using Notes app you can create quick notes that helps to organize upcoming deals.
In addition, the phone comes with Adobe Reader making it possible to view PDF files. You just have to select the menu Office – Adobe PDF and the phone will offer to select the memory storage where is located the file you want to be viewed.
Nokia E7’s browser makes it easy to view web pages with support for multitouch technology to scale the image on the screen. By default, when you open the browser it displays a folder with information about the pages you have viewed and pre-installed bookmarks: Ovi, Nokia.mobi, Music Store, Nokia Support and Here and Now bookmark which provides web-related services to the current location of the smartphone.
Thanks to Flash Lite 4 users can play almost any content that is compatible with Flash Player 10.1. Plus, the browser supports HTML, XHTML MP, WML, CSS and HTTP v1.1, WAP protocols.
Like other popular smartphones the Nokia E7 provides quick access to social networking sites. Directly from homescreen you can access to your Facebook or Twitter accounts. Once you save the settings the phone will remember it and there is no need to do the same work every time. You can also integrate this feature with your phone book and calendar transferring the needed information to the contacts.
Ovi Maps
GPS-navigation in the Nokia E7 is free. For this deal Nokia equipped the phone with Ovi Maps 3.04 that provides information on more than 180 countries around the world. Different modes of the app allow users to get more detailed information and it can be presented in 3D or night views. Plus, this app uses differentiation depending on how the object moves – driving or on foot. And users can get many useful information about traffic jams on the roads, the location of CCTV cameras, etc. Its user-friendly interface makes the app to be used very easily.
Ovi Store
To find and download necessary apps you can use Ovi Store where are a lot of programs, images, games, ringtones, themes and other content for mobile phones and smartphones of Nokia. It is built in a “smart store” idea, i.e. it offers those apps that depend on the location. For this deal you must create your account where are saved all the information about your purchases and downloads. This is important, because when you change your phone, your account will be valid for the new one too.
The Nokia E7 is a business smartphone, so it is supposed the phone’s owners will travel a lot. So to organize business travels there is a World Travel app. With its help you can create the list of needed items, plus, you can be informed about weather, transportation schedules, tickets, etc.

Though the Nokia E7 is not the “greenest” smartphone (as there is the Nokia C6) it has got all chances to become the first in this list. The device works in power saving mode. In general, the overall impression of the smartphone Nokia E7 is very positive. Yes, it is heavier than other models, but taking in hand, you feel its weight and power of a business smartphone. The camera lacks autofocus, but except the macro shots it can capture HQ pictures.
Anyway regardless the little lacks we discovered in this phone it’s a high-end smartphone. But that’s not the all as the Nokia E7 is a business smartphone with dedicated apps. So our verdict is positive and we think the smartphone is quite worthy to be called the best device of Nokia for now.
